TTS Toy

April 2020

I particularly enjoyed this project since I've always had a love for child and education. The brief for this project was to design and educational toy within a category, I chose construction.

At the start of this project, I really struggled to think of new and creative ideas since the there are already many products on the toy market. However, I chose to go down a less traditional route in terms of construction toys.

The idea I decided to develop and explore was the block stacker and how it can be different to what is already available.

One of the big things I wanted to focus on with this project was colour and sensory play since these are 2 main things that will encourage children to play with a product. I chose to use primary colours for the blocks mostly as they would be easy to distinguish but also help teach children their primary colours.

In terms of sensory play, I researched into what TTS already had on their website for sensory toys. I quickly found that adding texture to the blocks would be a simple way of adding sensory details but also explored the idea of clear cubes with water in them or adding scent patches.

The final play blocks come in 3 main colours with different textures added to the blocks as well as having ergonomic shapes for easy grip and use.

This project let me explore the idea of children's educational toys and honestly was one of my favourite projects still to date. Exploring how shapes, colour and texture can impact how a child interacts with a product was really interesting and has been something I have looked at further since.

For this project, I also began to look into material choices and in particular sustainable material choices, hence the use of wood for the stand and the blocks and aluminium for the poles as all these materials can be recycled or are sustainable to use. Since then, many of my projects focus around sustainable materials and processes.
